Fun with titles

I’ve mentioned some of the projects I’ve been involved with elsewhere, but this time I’m going to be involved with one that will unfurl right before your eyes. ^_^

Tomorrow, I will start participating in an event called ‘World Building Month’; the brainchild of the awesomely talented author Eliza from Tales of a Fantasy Scribbler. (Her blog is also snugly nested within my tanglebrush of links->)

What is World Building Month?:
Quote from Eliza’s blog:

“An open-invitation workshop for developing setting. Each participant will sign up here, write, and post articles on their own journal. At the end of each week, there will be a showcase of everyone’s projects.
World Building Month begins August 1st! Late-comers are welcome!”

So if this sounds like something you’d also like to participate in, by all means, join. It should be lots of fun and there are many talented writers participating.

I’m joining partly because Eliza has been around here since post #1, partly because I missed out on her ‘Villains Month’ last month, and because I decided it can’t hurt to take one more month aside to reinforce the world I’ve built. I’m hoping to discover many additional things about the land my characters are destined to traipse through, and I’m looking forward to sharing some of it with you. Read the rest of this entry »

Pull up a chair. Have I got a grotesquely long-winded story for you….

Once upon a time, before this blog came into existence, I was experimenting with software that magically ‘helps’ you write your book.

When I first installed Dramatica Pro v4.0 on my computer, I was shocked to see “What is the title of your story?” as the very first question in the ‘linear StoryGuide’: “The step-by-step process to conceptualizing your story”.

There were no tools to help me brainstorm a possible title, no hints to help, and no tips to figuring it out. Just an old-fashioned blank line with a flashing cursor, awaiting me to enter something to proceed to step two.

After racking my brains for a good hour or two while rolling back and forth on my bed like a human steam-roller, I entered ‘Untitled’ and proceeded.

Step two left me confronted with another dastardly question: “Briefly describe what happens in “Untitled”, including the Beginning, Middle, and End.”.

Another flashing cursor. This time in a great big empty page-sized box. I think my brain was also blank with nothing but a flashing cursor at that point. Although maybe the word ‘error’ made an appearance or two.

One thing’s for sure: Dramatica Pro doesn’t pull its punches. I ran away with my tail between my legs that day. I simply wasn’t ready for it.

But let’s try it again:

The dreaded questions

Posted: under Uncategorized.
Tags: book, Cirellio, fantasy, high fantasy, novel, style, write, writer, writing

A few epochs ago, I mentioned something called the ‘questionnaire approach’ to writing a book. The conundrum was I couldn’t answer those tough questions until I was ready to write the book, and I couldn’t write the book without being able to answer those tough questions.

When I mention I’m writing a book, I’m usually confronted with similar questions. Or a raised eyebrow and a healthy amount of skepticism.

It usually goes something like this:

“What have you been up to lately?”
“Well, besides the usual, I’m writing a book.”

There’s a lot of responses one can receive after saying they’ve started writing a book.
Here’s a few of the more common ones: Read the rest of this entry »

The 5th Ring: Seven Rays

Posted: under Uncategorized.
Tags: Cirellio, element, style, theme

The fifth ring is the final destination of any set of energy.

Creating fire? Going to Hell? First ring.
Traversing a continent? Going to Purgatory? Second ring.
Crossing an ocean? Being alive? Third ring.
Flying? Projecting to the Astral plane? Fourth ring.
Launching into space? Going to Heaven? Fifth ring.

So the fifth ring represents our ideals; those destinations which we most hope to reach someday. Read the rest of this entry »

One small step forward…

Posted: under Uncategorized.

…and one giant leap back.
Every time it feels like I’m making progress on my novel, something happens that forces me to reevaluate major plot points.

Like recently, I connected together the scenes I would need to bridge the middle of the book to the end, but a crucial question crept up: ‘Is it really necessary for my cities to be so far apart?’ …

That is something I’m going to have to seriously think about. Is what happens in each city something that could only happen in that respective city? Could the cities just as easily be villages? Could the continent also be shrunken down into just a few countries? Is it a NOOB writer mistake to include a journey just for the sake of having a journey, or because I need time to develop my characters before they get to the end? And I’m sure I still don’t know what it feels like to truly bleed words. Read the rest of this entry »

The 4th Ring: Air

Posted: under Uncategorized.
Tags: Cirellio, element, style, theme

Elementally speaking, the fourth ring is simply ‘the atmosphere’, which is easy enough to visualize: the troposphere, stratosphere, mesosphere, and ionosphere. It is also our state of mind, our intellect, our subconscious, our instincts, and the scales that balance good and evil.

But metaphysically speaking, there’s a lot more to it. Read the rest of this entry »

The 3rd Ring: Water

Posted: under Uncategorized.
Tags: 5-Rings, Cirellio, element, style, theme

The third ring is our physical reality. It is also the classical element of water; what makes up the oceans, lakes, rain, and reservoirs—the water cycle. It is what living organisms are made of. It is the soul.

While it may seem destructive due to phenomenon like floods, lava flows, monsoons, corrosion, and landslides, it is ultimately an element of purity. It sustains life and transports sediments and seeds. It is a natural lubricant, helping rocks go deep beneath the earth into extreme temperatures to melt down and, ultimately, come back as new, larger rocks. It is the basis of all natural cycles, including the ones within the cells of our body that take very little energy and multiply it into larger amounts of energy.
