I definitely wanted a prologue that started out with something highly atmospheric.  Scene 01 was inspired by the crumbling palace in the prologue of The Eye of the World.

Mine starts with an ancient city that appears in seemingly random places on Lura, this time sinking into the ocean. I felt this would create atmosphere similar to the crumbling palace. But it turned out this scene was awfully hard to write. Here’s the first line:

“The city had settled beneath the ocean by the time Dahjal arrived.”

What had me so nervous yesterday? Maybe it’s that I’m finally at the edge of the diving board and just need to jump.

It’s always disheartening to see someone climb all the way up the ladder, nearing the edge one nervous baby-step at a time; Then, as they gaze out over the crystalline waters and at all the staring faces, realize how high they’ve climbed … just to cower and climb all the way back down. And all they had to do was jump—just once—to find out it’s not as scary as it looks.
