I definitely wanted a prologue that started out with something highly atmospheric. Scene 01 was inspired by the crumbling palace in the prologue of The Eye of the World.
Mine starts with an ancient city that appears in seemingly random places on Lura, this time sinking into the ocean. I felt this would create atmosphere similar to the crumbling palace. But it turned out this scene was awfully hard to write. Here’s the first line:
“The city had settled beneath the ocean by the time Dahjal arrived.”
A character named Dahjal is drawn to this phenomenon every time it happens. He is one of the four demons.
As I wrote the scene, I wanted to be sure I kept the narrative from his point of view. Any thoughts and observations had to be his. Not omniscient.
I also had to keep in mind:
-He is an immortal and thinks like one.
-He is somewhat excited because this was the city he grew up in and rarely gets to see it (maybe once every 1500 years or so).
-He is frustrated the city keeps appearing in irritating places.
-He is full of hope because he expects a female demon he has fallen in love with to be there.
-And he is worried because …
“The manifestation of the great city of Enoch was always a portent. Terrible things would follow.”
I’m almost finished with scene 01. WC to follow!
