The rooftops

The location page got a hefty update. The characters page got a minor one (I’m going to update that more, soon). Since I came up with a lot of those names on-the-fly, feedback is most definitely welcome. Especially if anything I named there also happens to be the name of a rare foot disease, or whatever.

Anyway, the next scene is when I start to coordinate the groups of characters I’ve introduced.

There’s traditional Shiirati music as a backdrop; heavy rhythmic drum beats echoing through the city due to the festivites.

There’s Cauinn—along with nearly the entire population of the city—at the Feast of the Eight. She still has Cirellio’s lock of hair and is waiting patiently for him.

There’s the guards patrolling every city street.

There’s Cirellio sneaking through the city.

There’s Mourn, Cyronil, Shanung, and Eth, carefully looking for Cirellio, Nevius, and Morikel from the city’s rooftops.

There’s Marrow, left behind at the chapterhouse with the other lesser members, bored out of his skull.

There’s Nevius and Morikel, possibly stalking through the city as well.

There’s Dahjal and Asyria at the convergence.

And finally, there’s Kithani, the assassin woman—somewhere—believing an angel is in her head, guiding her.

At this point in the story, simultanious events are going to start shifting around a single central event, converging into one storyline. There’s a visual element stirred out of this event that will serve as a time-marker. I’ve never really seen that attempted in a fantasy book before, so I thought I would give it a try. You’ll see what that visual element is soon enough.

This scene is Shanung, Cyronil, Eth, and Mourn trotting the stairways and rooftops of the city. After they give up their search and start heading back to the chapterhouse, Eth happens to spot two people—who definitely weren’t city guards—run across a street into an alleyway. They make their way to the streets below for a better look.

Meanwhile, back at the chapterhouse, Marrow is frustrated by seeing a symbol he was too dim-witted to notice before Shanung pointed it out to him during his watch. He goes to the bar room and falls asleep among the other guild members.

I guess a big part of a writer’s job is tirelessly keeping track of who is where—and what they are doing—at all times.

Not participating in this event:

1. Anati, who is still in Gargues-Pula.
2. Rahaab, who is busy manipulating his men from Brennan.
3. The fourth demon, who I have not yet revealed his name (but now I guess I’ve revealed his sex :P).
4. Of course, Larimosa is accounted for, in another Marais temple room.
5. Lord Gazic is chillin’ in Aydomar, awaiting a response from Cirellio.
6. Matar is carrying a message of confirmation, flying back to Aydomar. Three days to get back by air.
7. Redmond is staying the night in an Aydomarian inn and is going to start heading back to Brennan on the morrow with his two escorts.
8. Most of the royalty is minding their own business in their own cities right now, though King Rezzik is planning something rather devious.

There! I think everybody is accounted for. :)

  1. Wow, I did not realize how many characters are involved in Five Rings. It must be hard to keep track! But I give you props on writing out where every one is at and what they are doing. That must make it so much easier. I’m off to read your locations/chars pages.. :)

  2. Hi Latrina!
From what I understand, the number of characters I have on the playing field is quite normal for high fantasy. As they make their way across Kassara, there’ll be even more added to the entourage, including one of my favorites that I’m excited to (eventually) introduce: Aeriallas.

Eye of the World had over 200 distinct major and minor characters (that’s counting everyone from the main character and his friends to the tavern owners and employees at local inns), and Knife of Dreams had nearly 700! I think my head would be spinning if I had to keep track of that many characters. So I’ll try to keep my horses a wee bit more reigned-in than that. :)
